Humans have a main energy source which is a form of sugar otherwise called glucose. This type of energy is taken from foods which have or are made up of carbohydrates. The body will regulate the glucose levels with the hormone called insulin which is naturally produced inside us.
However, what are normal blood sugar levels?
In the average person, the levels are normally between 70mg and 150mg. These levels vary depending on the time of day, typically being lower in the morning and rising after we have eaten.
If the level falls below 70mg, then we have low blood sugar otherwise known as hypoglycaemia. And if the level is raised above the 150mg mark, then it is known as high blood sugar or hyperglycaemia.
Having low levels of sugar can be dangerous. The body usually responds by being lethargic, irritable and other signs which may include dizziness or falling unconscious.
High levels of glucose could be an indicator of diabetes. The tell tale signs of diabetes are well known and the body may respond by showing damage to the kidneys, eye sight and weight problems.
A blood sugar test will make it easily possible to detect the current levels of glucose present in the persons bloodstream. This is the most common of the methods which are used to tell if a person may have diabetes or hypoglycaemia.
