Diabetic complications come when high blood glucose wreaks havoc with the body’s ability to keep a consistent environment internally. This is called homeostasis and every living cell needs it to live.

High blood sugar levels make it very hard for a diabetic’s cells to maintain homeostasis and this causes complications. The long - term complications usually happen very slowly and that is why most people are unaware of what is going on in their own body.

Heart disease and strokes are 2 to 3 times more prevalent in diabetics. 55% of all deaths in diabetic patients is caused by cardiovascular disease.

Eye disease involving the light - sensitive cells in the back half of the eye is called retinopathy. This is the hemorrhages and scarring that causes blindness. Diabetics are also plagued with cataracts.

Nerve disease is characterized by tingling and numbness in the limbs. Sometimes a burning pain known as neuropathic pain is felt. This will effect nearly 60% of all diabetics eventually.

Kidney disease caused by diabetes is the most common reason for kidney transplants.

Poor wound healing and foot ulcers in people with high blood sugar are common because of the poor blood supply. Diabetics account for over 50% of the lower limb amputations each year in this country.

Depression and memory loss is very common in diabetics and may be the first symptom to occur in a

pre diabetic. Insulin resistance seems to effect the brain cells very early in the start of this disease.

Achieving blood sugar control is the main step in preventing complications. Good nutrition and exercise can prolong your good health and add productive years to your life.
