If you visit your physician regularly you may be diagnosed with pre-diabetes which typically precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes. During your exam you doctor may have check your blood sugar and found that your blood glucose levels were 100 — 125 mg/dL — higher than normal. This means they your blood sugar was high but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. What this means is that you are at risk for diabetes.
If you have been diagnosed treatment of diabetes and pre-diabetes is very important. Medical studies have shown that lifestyle and medical changes can help prevent, or at least delay, the progression to diabetes. While your doctor may recommend insulin-regulating drugs you should know that evidence proves that lifestyle changes can be at least as effective as drug therapy. One of the most effective treatments of diabetes and pre-diabetes is weight loss through diet and regular exercise. You can significantly reduce your risk with even a modest weight loss of 10 — 15 pounds.
People who are diabetic also have a higher risk for heart disease and stroke therefore diet and exercise will also improve heart health. Regular monitoring of your blood sugar is also vital to keep this disease in check.
The major treatment goals for people with type 2 diabetes are:
- Treat all conditions that place patients at risk for heart disease and stroke, the major killers of people with type 2 diabetes.
- Control your blood glucose levels. Your goal should be to achieve a fasting blood glucose level of less than 110 mg/dL and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels of less than 7%. Your major objective is to reduce complications in small blood vessels and the nerve damage that comes with high blood sugar.
- In general, most people with type 2 diabetes should aim for HbA1c levels of less than 7%. If you have heart disease or are at a high risk you should speak with your doctor about individualized treatment goals for intensive blood sugar control.
To successfully beat this disease you must take an aggressive, multi-pronged approach. Intensive therapy includes:
- Healthy lifestyle changes that include regular exercise and a heart-healthy diet.
- Regular monitoring of blood sugar to keep it within safe levels.
- Dietary supplements including Bitter Melon, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Cinnamon which are proven to regulate your blood sugar, thereby reducing the need for physician prescribed drugs.
