Causes of Diabetes - Simplified

Even with the advancement of medical science, medical scientists have not determined the exact causes of diabetes. However, they have found very strong factors which may lead to diabetes. These factors are referred to as risk factors and should be overcome.
Poor diet
This is one of the major causes of diabetes. A diet consisting of too much carbohydrates and fats does much damage to the body. Too much of these foods hamper the pancreas from insulin secretion which then cause the blood sugar level to rise.
Obesity
This is another major factor causing diabetes. The insulin does not function well in an obese person as the tissue cells become resistant to insulin.
Smoking
Frequent or heavy smokers are more susceptible to developing diabetes. They are also more prone to developing diabetic retinopathy (a disease which affects the eyes) and joint mobility.
Emotional stress
Persons with a highly stressed life tend to develop diabetes. Stress comes in many forms. Busy schedules and work-related pressures affect the metabolism of the body. Anxiety and grief also alter the blood sugar level and may lead to diabetes.
Sedentary Lifestyle
Persons with sedentary lifestyle are more prone to developing diabetes. Those who exercise regularly for three times or more a week are at low risk of getting the disease.
Hypertension
Many studies have shown that there is direct relation between high blood pressure and diabetes.
Increased age
Diabetes may occur almost at any age, but the greater percentage of cases occur after middle age as most people tend to exercise less and put on weight.
Hereditary
There are very strong medical indications that a person can inherit diabetes. The risk is even greater for the child if both parents are diabetic.
Though medical scientists have not be able to pin-point what causes diabetes, there are strong factors indicating that a healthy lifestyle can go a long way to preventing diabetes. Regular exercises or physical activities play an important role too.
