Being diagnosed with diabetes requires a more or less drastic change in diet and general lifestyle. Switching to a healthy and organized diet, backed up by medication and exercise, will help you keep the blood sugar levels under control. Your dietician or physician should be able to help you build a diet plan that you should stick to.

First and foremost, a patient diagnosed with diabetes should stay away from all fats, be they in meat, milk, cheese or even butter. All these should be replaced with low fat alternatives. Pork and beef, for example, should be replaced with chicken or fish. A diabetic should stay away from all foods that are rich in carbohydrates, and here we could include pizza (actually, all “junk food”), potato chips and anything baked with white flour.

Diabetics should avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners, including honey. The only generally allowed sweetener is Stevia, a plant grown in South America. You should consult with your local naturist shop for quotes and availability. Since it is not grown world-wide, it could be hard to find in some regions. If you really want a chocolate treat every once in a while, choose one with 60% or more cocoa solids, like the Continental dark chocolate and aim for one that has as little sugar as possible.

To the furthest extent possible, refreshing drinks should be eliminated from a diabetic’s diet, as they contain a huge dose of sugar, some have a few teaspoons per cup. They should be replaced with plain water or at most one cup of natural juice per day. Also, alcohol is known to raise the blood sugar level. Hence, it should be consumed with moderation or avoided completely.
