List of Foods For Diabetics to Eat

Diabetes, a condition characterized by a high level of glucose in the bloodstream, can be kept under control, provided a strict diet regime is followed. Diabetics should refrain from consuming any foods rich in carbohydrates (honey, sweets, sugar, white bread, potato chips). Also, dishes rich in fats and sodium should be avoided. Without claiming to show a full list, here is what diabetics are allowed (and recommended) to eat in order to keep the blood sugar level down to a normal value.
Vegetables are recommended in all kinds of diets, diabetic or not. They provide the body with minerals, fiber and vitamins and can be a source of energy for the daily activities. Recommended vegetables include spinach, broccoli, cabbage, peppers and tomatoes. Vegetables should be eaten fresh, since cooking them usually destroys their beneficial properties. Fruits fall into this category as well, but should be consumed with moderation, since they contain a fairly large concentration of carbohydrates. Apples, bananas, mango and oranges are highly recommended and can keep the glucose level down to a reasonable value.
A high concentration of calcium can be found in milk, which is also on the foods for diabetics list. Derivatives are also alright (yoghurts, for example), provided they are low-fat.
Starches should be a part of every diabetic’s diet. While white bread can be detrimental to your health, starches, found in cereals, pasta and grains, will do miracles for your blood sugar level.
Last, but not least, diabetics should consume meat and substitutes with moderation. Low fat fish are recommended for diabetics and have more therapeutic value than red meats and poultry. If not consumed in excess, meat can be put on a diabetic’s food list.
