A high blood sugar level, also known as hyperglycemia, happens when the body cannot properly respond to insulin. Two scenarios are to be noted: the type 1 diabetes, when the body cannot make enough insulin, and the type 2 diabetes, when it doesn’t respond to insulin properly. Since the insulin cannot break down glucose into components cells drain energy from, a high level of sugar goes into the bloodstream. With proper treatment, diabetes can be kept under control and the level of blood sugar should stay down at a reasonable value. However, there are reasons why the concentration of glucose in a patient’s blood can go through the roof.

Not following a diet and meal plan is the most frequent cause of high blood sugar levels. Diabetics tend to eat too much on special occasions, or eat foods they are not allowed to, without adjusting the medicine dosages. Eating a meal rich in carbohydrates every once in a while will not lead to disastrous consequences, provided this is backed up by adequate medicine.

This leads us to the second most frequent cause of high blood glucose levels: not taking the prescribed medicine at all or not taking the right dosage per day. Patients should always follow the doctor’s advice when taking the insulin and adjust the dosage with any out of the ordinary event.

Not exercising enough is another cause the diabetics experience high blood sugar levels. Exercising moderately can keep your glucose level under control. However, your doctor should recommend an exercising plan. Diabetics often accuse heart and circulatory problems, and over-exhausting exercise can lead to even more severe complications. A few pushups, or a little jogging in the morning, before breakfast, can help to keep your blood sugar levels under control.
