Chromium for diabetics … just about everywhere you look you will find information about the importance of this supplement for diabetes. This trace element is needed for the glucose tolerance factor (GTF) in your body to work properly; it actually regulates your blood sugar levels.

Like other trace elements such as selenium and vanadium, chromium levels can rise to the point where they become toxic in your body. Two of the first signs that chromium levels are rising are:

  • insomnia
  • increased unpleasant dream activity.

There are different forms of chromium compounds:

  • trivalent chromium
  • hexavalent chromium

Trivalent chromium is the form that is considered to be the trace element needed for human and animal health. This form is not toxic unless large amounts are taken; although there have been actual cases where people have taken too much … they developed insomnia and had bad dreams. In earlier studies, cases of people developing aneurysms were reported on levels greater than 200 mcg/day.

The hexavalent chromium compounds are considerably more toxic. These chromium compounds are found in the air usually as a result of industrial exposure. The industries that release this compound include stainless steel and ferrochromium manufacturing plants, wood finishing and leather tanning industries, and also cement handling facilities. Hexavalent chromium compounds are inhaled, and when significant amounts are absorbed into your body via the skin and lungs, bronchitis, lung cancer, skin ulcers and dermatitis can result.

High levels can also cause cancer, as seen in the Erin Brockovich movie which starred Julia Roberts.

There is another aspect of chromium toxicity that isn’t discussed very often … it is the imbalance of other essential nutrients in the body when excess chromium is taken via supplements. This may surprise you, but when one element is taken in excess it causes an imbalance in several others.

Think about the vitamin C complex of vitamins; in nature vitamin C is never found alone … it is always found alongside of quercetin, bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin. Taking vitamin C alone in high doses, causes a decrease in the balance of the other vitamin C compounds and inhibits their function. Unfortunately this then creates new health problems: one of those might be capillary fragility which means they are so weak they break easily. Little pinpoint hemorrhages show up on your skin.

When you take high doses of chromium and neglect the other elements that chromium works with in your body, you can end up creating deficiencies.

One of the best ways to find out if your body needs chromium is to work with a health care practitioner trained in how to read a hair analysis. This is a simple forensic type of test where your hair sample is burned and the minerals and toxic elements the hair contained remain … then the ash is analyzed for mineral content.
