Finding out you have diabetes and learning how to treat it is stressful enough. Deciding where to buy your diabetic supplies should not be. You have several options depending on your situation.
If you have Medicare, you can use one of the many diabetic supply companies that deliver right to your door. They often do not have upfront costs and do your insurance claim paperwork for you. These really are the easiest option to use. They even send you reminders when you need to renew. If you have Medicare you can also get your supplies at your local pharmacy but keep in mind they will not do your paperwork for you, there may be upfront charges and you have to drive there to get your supplies. Pharmacies also do not have to accept Medicare as payment for diabetic supplies if they choose not to.
It you do not have Medicare but have another type of health insurance you have the same options as people with Medicare. There are mail order companies you can order through or you can go to your local pharmacy. Pharmacies take almost all health insurance so that won’t be a problem but keep in mind when using mail order, it’s always cheaper but you may have to use certain companies that the health insurance company have agreements with.
If you have Medicaid, your options are also the same, except you can use any pharmacy or mail order company you choose.
If you have no insurance or are under-insured check with your local department of health or social services agencies, as they will be able to direct you to programs that offer free supplies. There are also suppliers that you can order from at wholesale prices, do an internet search. Just remember if you have diabetes, you have to treat it in order to keep it under control and prevent devastating complications.
