Medicare Diabetes Supply - More Than Just a Monitor

Something you may not know is that Medicare covers the same supplies for people who use insulin to treat their diabetes as well as those who do not. Getting your diabetic equipment and supplies is fairly easy on Medicare. There are a few things you need to remember though.
The first thing you have to do is get a prescription that states diabetes as a diagnosis, whether or not use insulin, what kind of blood glucose monitoring meter you need (such as special ones for vision impaired patients), how often you should test your blood sugar and how many test strips and lancets you need in a month. Some neighborhood pharmacies take Medicare as partial payment, and many mail order companies will even cover them in full with no upfront payment. They send the supplies directly to your home have no shipping charges, and complete all the Medicare and supplemental insurance claim forms for you. You do not have to wait for reimbursement either. Most of them serve all 50 states also. These companies usually send you a three-month supply to start,
Medicare covers some other things besides durable medical supplies. It covers therapeutic shoes that a podiatrist prescribes. Medicare will cover one pair of therapeutic shoes per year for Medicare patients. You must have a history of foot ulcers, poor circulation; nerve damage caused by diabetes, partial foot amputation or deformed feet.
Medicare also covers things like diabetes screenings, hemoglobin A1c tests, special eye exams, nutrition therapy services and diabetic self management training. It will also pay for special eye exams (called a dilated eye exam) once a year and for testing for glaucoma. Of course everyone’s situation and supplemental insurance coverage is different so check the fine print on your policies.
