This is a deadly eating disorder that usually strikes only younger women with type I diabetes. Statistics show that up to 50% of women ages 16-24 will have this condition. This disorder occurs when younger women will purposefully omit or restrict their insulin to lose weight. This condition results in high blood sugars and can have permanent or deadly effects on the body.

Bulimia results in loss of consumed calories through intentional vomiting and use of excessive amounts of laxatives. A purposeful purging of food intake.

Diabulimia is a different kind of purging. As sugar levels rise in the blood stream, the body works to get rid of it. The kidneys work overtime and results in frequent urination. Rapid weight loss results from this purging of sugar in the urine.

How To Recognize Diabulimia In Others

Increased frequency in urination

Increased blood glucose

Increased HbA1C

Weight loss

Obsession with weight and food intake

Loss of regular periods (Amenorrhea)

Frequent nausea / vomiting

Fruity odor to breath or skin

Hospitalizations due to ketoacidosis (a condition of extremely high blood sugar which can result in a buildup of fluid in the brain, kidney failure or death)

Long-term high blood glucose can result in blindness, loss of kidney function, amputation of toes (feet and legs), heart failure, stroke, or premature death.

It is very important to recognize diabulimia in either yourself or others. Treatment is available. Hospitalization for the immediate problems of high blood glucose is probably the first step. Followed by treatment for the eating disorder itself.
