Food That Contain Carbohydrates - What Pre Diabetics and Diabetics Must Know
Posted by admin in Prescription Diabetes Drugs on February 05th, 2011
Carbohydrates (known as “carbs” ) are the “tools” pre-diabetics and diabetics use to manage their blood sugar. Their main job is to supply your body with energy, and that is the reason even pre-diabetics or diabetics must continue to eat them. There are many foods which contain grams of carbohydrates, and it is important to know which ones, and in what quantity. A nutritionist can tell you how many carbs you should include in each meal, depending up your blood sugar level.
I recently found I have pre-diabetes, and the nutritionist advised that I take 30 to 45 grams of carbs per meal. Let us start with the number of grams in carbs that there are in this range. That is not to suggest to make a meal out of these foods, but just to give you the idea of the number of carbohydrates they include. Thirty grams of carbs are included in 1 cup of spaghetti and meat balls; a piece of lasagna (3″ x 4″); one quarter of a 10″ pizza; 1 plain doughnut; a cup of chocolate milk; 1 cup of macaroni and cheese; 1 chicken pot pie; or ? cup regular pudding. Forty-five grams of carbs are present in 1 small sweet roll, 1/6 of a fruit pie, or a 12 ounce can of soda, etc.
Food containing carbs include dairy foods, fruits, snacks, pastas, grains, cereals, vegetables, cream based soups, and breads, so it is important to read labels. For example, in the bread category, there are 15 grams of carbs in the following: 1 small muffin, ? English muffin, 1 plain small dinner roll, ? hamburg or hot dog bun, a 6 inch tortilla, 1 waffle, 4 Melba toasts, 1/3 cup stuffing, ? of a large bagel, and 1 slice of bread (white, whole wheat, or rye).
What diabetics must know about food that contains carbohydrates is extremely important for both pre-diabetics or diabetics, therefore, when meals are being planned, the total carbs have to be regulated. In my meal planning, for example, since I have a limit of 30-45 grams, for lunch I could have 1 slice of bread (15), 1 cup of broth based soup (15) and ? cup baked beans (15), for a total of 45. If I wished to eliminate one of these, I could have a snack that night of 4 cups of popped popcorn (15), or 2 small cookies (15). Just be careful not to exceed your limit. Diabetes is nothing to fool around with.
