Diabetes is a chronic illness caused by elevated blood sugar levels. When your body digests carbohydrates, proteins and fats, it processes the glucose from your food. Diabetes results from too much glucose entering in the bloodstream, which leads to a wide variety of health problems.
Type 2 diabetes is usually considered a “lifestyle” disease and so physicians usually make their patients aware of a list of foods for diabetics to eat. Diabetics are usually counseled to eat strategically in order to maintain an even blood sugar level.
Here is a list of foods for diabetics to eat:
Protein:
This is essential to growth and repair of muscle and other tissues. Unless you are a vegetarian, you can eat meat on a diabetic diet. The top choices are poultry, beef, cottage cheese, peanut butter, whey protein isolate, tofu, fish and egg.
Fats:
The types of beneficial fats we need most are monounsaturated fats found in seeds, avocados, fish, and vegetables. Eggs also contain much needed fat for your brain function.
Complex Carbohydrates:
Whole grain cereals, limited bread and pasta is preferable. Overly processed starches are not recommended for diabetics.
Minerals:
Dairy foods and vegetables provide carbohydrate, fat as well as vitamins and minerals while fruits provide essential minerals as well fiber for your diet but must be consumed in moderation. Include two to four servings of each in your meal plan each day.
Vitamins:
Both water and fat soluble vitamins are important in many of our body’s chemical processes. Our modern lifestyle and our food choices often cause us to neglect the required amounts of minerals, vitamins and fiber needed in our diets. Be sure to include two to four servings of vegetables in your meal plan each day
Water:
This element is often neglected in the essential nutrients list but indispensable to life; 60% of the human body is water.
Compile your unique list of foods for diabetics to eat. The diabetic diet goal is to eat a balanced meal that will allow your body to stay on an even level throughout the day as each meal hits your system.
