If you have had a glucose test and the physician’s assistant or doctor says your sugar is “a little high” or “higher than normal” or something similar, don’t just ignore it. Diabetes is judged on whether your number is 126 after fasting twice. Now professionals even look at numbers exceeding 100. If your fasting number is close to the diabetes number, you have pre-diabetes. Do something about it immediately in order to prevent your getting Type 2 diabetes.

I had a physician’s assistant tell me after 2 or 3 tests that my sugar was high, but she didn’t suggest medication or anything else. I happened to go to a doctor on another matter and she said she thought I had “undiagnosed diabetes”. I was tested again and found I had pre-diabetes. Although pre-diabetes normally shows no symptoms, I had noticed that my feet always felt as if I had socks on. She tested my feet with a small needle, and found I didn’t have feeling in part of my feet. She attributed this to high blood sugar. With pre-diabetes there are changes to the body which may not be noticeable. Just because you don’t know of any changes, with high blood sugar they are already underway.

The actions to take are quite simple. It beats the alternative of serious diabetes! A change of lifestyle should be implemented, that includes healthy eating and exercise. The doctor may also suggest keeping a diabetes monitoring kit at home, and testing your blood every 2 or 3 days. Most of the kits give you a little notebook type thing where you can chart the results. In my case the doctor also suggested going to a dietician to find out what foods to eat or not to eat. Walking is recommended as a wonderful exercise. Start with a 15 minute walk and eventually progress to 30 minutes. There is a lot to learn about controlling diabetes.
