Posted by admin in Prescription Diabetes Drugs on May 03rd, 2011
This is just basic information concerning the TLC diet for diabetic patients.
The acronym TLC stands for Therapeutic Lifestyle Change and is diet for diabetics
Diabetic patients with abnormal levels of cholesterol in their blood are usually advised to follow the TLC diet. This diet involves reduction of foods that are high in cholesterol and also promotes fast and effective weight loss. It consists of certain restrictions in the diet as well as increased activity levels. A diabetic patient on a TLC diet is required to do some physical activities.
The following points are important diet recommendations which should be observed. These are:
1. Total fat consumption should be only 25 - 35% or less of total carbohydrates consumed every day
2. Only 7% or less of saturated fats of the total calories should be consumed per day
3. Polyunsaturated fats should be 10% of total caloric intake per day (example: margarine)
4. Monounsaturated fats should be not less that 20% of daily caloric intake
Following these specifications in the TLC diet and intake at the right proportions can decrease the cholesterol levels and can lead to immediate weight reduction.
Another aspect of the TLC diet is proper consumption of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates should consist of 50-60% of the daily caloric intake. The participant is also encouraged to eat a good amount of fibre. 20-30 grams of fibre is TLC Diet recommendation. Excellent sources of fibre include barley, psyllium, beans and oats. Fibre has a number of nutritional benefits and one of them is that is increases intestinal bulk so a person can feel full longer and it encourages good digestion.
This diet also consists of consumption of lean protein. 15-20% of the daily caloric intake should consist of lean protein. Participants of this diet are also required to maintain cholesterol intake and they should not reach 200 mg.
