Learning How to Control Diabetes

Maybe you, like me, have recently been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes can be a life threatening condition as I know from my own experience. One of the first things you are told, once diagnosed, is all about the possible complications. Blindness, heart seizure, stroke, amputation - they don’t hold anything back! It is scary.

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you need to realize that you can control diabetes and live a normal life. You do this by losing any excess weight and maintaining it, following the instructions of your doctor and taking your medication. Eat sensibly, take some exercise, and you can eliminate the complications that often arise in someone with this condition.

There are many ways you can control diabetes. Many people who are first diagnosed don’t want to believe they have the illness, they are in denial. Although diabetes has become somewhat of a world wide epidemic, many people refuse to believe that they could possibly have this disease.

Type I and Type2 Diabetes are actually quite different illnesses. Type I Diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and very young adults. It used to be called Juvenile Diabetes as it was diagnosed in children at early ages. However today the age factor has been has been seen to alter. I am a Type 1 diabetic and did not get the illness until my sixties.

Type I diabetics have a pancreas which does not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone which is needed to take sugar from the blood into the cells. Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by a virus attacking the immune system.

Type 2 diabetes has been associated with people of middle-age and beyond. It is generally diagnosed later in life. Obesity and lack of exercise have been named as the main culprits of the illness. Here again the age factor is blurred, as more and more youngsters get Type 2 diabetes from an early age, probably because of poor diet.

You can control diabetes. If you are diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you need to have a blood sugar monitor so that you can keep a record of your blood sugar. Testing the glucose in your blood allows you to manage your diet and exercise to best effect.

If you have Type 1 diabetes you will be using insulin at least twice a day. Type 2’s will be prescribed oral medication if their diet & exercise regime does not keep blood sugar levels under control. Never forget to take your medication. It could lead to you falling into a coma.

Once diagnosed you will have access to a dietician/ nutritionist who will advise you on which foods are most beneficial for your diet. Unfortunately many people who have Type 2 diabetes are what is called non compliant. This means that they do not take their medication, do not monitor their blood sugar and eat all the wrong things. This is the start of getting serious health complications in the future.

You can control your diabetes if you take your medication as prescribed, monitor your blood sugars every day, take some regular exercise and eat a nutritious diet. Life as a diabetic is great, once you get into a steady routine.
