Your goals should be to replace these with mono and polyunsaturated fats from plant sources and fish. Recent studies point out that although fats from fish are better than unsaturated fats, the amount consumed should also be moderate.
3. Do not smoke.
4. Consume alcohol in moderation. The active ingredients in red wine, phenols, have been found to act in a way that’s similar to antioxidant vitamins on the body, so that researchers now believe that one glass of red wine a day is thought to be a protection against heart disease.
5. Change your eating habits. Eat high-fiber carbohydrate foods; eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Keep in mind that you should spread your intake of starchy foods on an even basis throughout the day and back this up by eating regular meals. This will help in reducing highs and lows in your blood glucose levels.
6. Reduce your overall weight. If necessary, then keep to within 20 percent of your ideal target weight and measurements.
7. Keep an eye on your cholesterol levels. Not just your overall cholesterol readings, but especially your HDL levels. Your HDL (good cholesterol) levels should always be higher, but often times in persons who have been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome, those levels are lower than the LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.
By implementing the above tips, you will go a long way to reversing the diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome X, but you are also lowering your likelihood of being a candidate for heart disease.

Diabetes is a blessing? Is she crazy? If you are wondering why I titled my article like I did then read on.
I was number ten of a family of eleven. When I was younger, as a matter of fact, nine years old I was still wetting the bed. The reason being that I could not process sugars and starches because my pancreas was not producing insulin. Back then my parents thought I was just too lazy to get up and use the bathroom. I went to a Catholic school and I would nod off during class. The nuns would whack me with a ruler to wake me up. They, nor I, at the time understand that I was suffering with either hyperglycemia, high blood sugar where an overabundance of sugar is circulating in the blood or hypoglycemia, low blood sugar where there is an inadequate about of glucose or fuel to the brain. I was constantly thirsty and would eat more food than any of my brothers. All these symptoms were signs of diabetes.
The treatment, back then, for type 1 sugar diabetes was insulin injections. I was a child with diabetes and everyone in my family wanted to know what could be done. Diabetes is a disease and there is no cure. So, why would I think it is a blessing? Read on.
Giving a child shots everyday, for my mother, was horrifying. Being number ten of eleven children I did not get a lot of attention until, whala! I was looked at as being different from the rest. My mother use to introduce me to people and say “This is my daughter and she is a diabetic but she does not look like one does she?” Even though diabetes is a disease I was not sure what I was suppose to look like. I finally got my moment in the sun.
I was a tomboy and liked to play kickball with the neighborhood boys. I was just a silly girl, until I started giving myself my own injections to help control my own blood glucose levels. Before that I was dependent on my mom. After I started giving my own injections the boys thought I was cool because I would go outside so they could see me stick this needle in my thigh and not cry. I was taking six shots a day to help control my diabetes.
None of my other brothers or sisters has type 1 diabetes mellitus but, the disease that six of them have is alcoholism. My father was an alcoholic but NOT a diabetic.
Diabetes usually runs in the family and may skip a generation but in my case it did not run in my family. Sooo, I ask myself like most other people with a disease, Why me?
Diabetic Exchange Diet Foods - Can They Help in Treating Diabetes?

The American Diabetes Association and Dietetic Association are famous for having evolved an amazing system of good foods for diabetics. The system is now identified as Diabetic Exchange Diet Foods that can work well in treating diabetes. The list of foods for diabetics is given as diabetic food pyramid on the label of the food product. However, it is advisable that you consult a registered dietitian before consuming the food product.
The dietitian is the apt person to give a meal plan on diabetic diet foods that can help control blood glucose levels. The diabetic will also be advised to measure the amount of food to eat while on diet, and will be guided to consume 3 meals and 2 or three snacks every day. The diet foods are divided into six groups, each group consisting of different foods to eat in different measures. By that way, one can ensure the right way of eating foods daily in right measure. Meat and cheese: The exchange diet for meat includes lean meat and low fat substitutes for 50 calories, medium fat meat and substitutes for 75 calories, and high fat meat for 100 calories. Starch and bread: Each exchange includes carbohydrates-15 grams, protein-3 grams, and a little amount of fat to give totally 80 calories where the serving size may differ. Usually, 1/2 cup cooked cereal, grain, or pasta constitutes one exchange. For bread product, it is one ounce for one serving.
Vegetables: The diabetic can have vegetables-cooked (1/2 cup), raw 1 cup, and juice (1/2 cup). Each group contains carbohydrates-5 grams, protein-2 grams, and fiber-2 to 3 grams. The vegetables may be fresh or frozen. Canned food is good if it contains low sodium.
Fruits: Eating fruits containing carbohydrates-15 grams is recommended to give 60 calories. The serving may be 1/2 banana or1 small orange as 1 exchange.
Milk: A cup or 6 ounce of milk is 1 exchange diet for 80 calories. Skimmed milk or very low fat milk is good for those having cholesterol.
Fats: Fats are stored for extra calories for future need. The fat exchange is 50 calories which may vary in serving size. Fats are stored in butter, margarine, oils, and dairy products. It is usually better to avoid saturated fats.

I am an Insulin Dependent Diabetic, and have been so since I was in my early 20s. Until that time I had been a reasonably fit and quite healthy specimen. Unfortunately for me at that time, as a typical Australian male in the prime of my life, I refused to see a doctor, believing instead that what ever was wrong with me would pass. It wasn’t until my wife pressured me and then threatened to leave me that I decided to do something about it.
By this time I had lost so much weight I looked like a skeleton with a thin covering of skin. I was about 82.5Kg or 182 pounds and in a period of around 2 weeks I dropped to about 38Kg or around 84 pounds. Things got so bad for me that when I stood from sitting, I had to drag my left leg behind because it wouldn’t work for walking straight away. I was pretty sick! Anyhoo, I went into hospital for treatment and started learning how to manage this incredibly complex illness that had befallen me. For many years, I hated the world and got to a point where I felt I was owed something. Guess what?? I didn’t get it!
Slowly over time, I put weight back on and started to rebuild muscle. I still have troubles in my legs almost 20 years later. From day 1 it seemed that I would have nothing but trouble managing my blood glucose levels with the correct insulin regime. Doctors changed the types of insulin I was on 3 times before they found the one that seemed to work. Even then though I was still using a lot. I would take between 50 and 60 units of slow acting insulin in 2 injections every day, as well as nearly 80 units of fast acting insulin in 6 injections daily. I tell you it can get bloody annoying…
